Running a jnlp file

Posted on Saturday April 30th, 2016

Work had me access a Cisco ASDM today, however, its management console is java based. Trying to excute the java file on OSX has it screaming for Java v6. I always thought that older versions were supported, but this does not appear to be the case.

I had several further failures with a WindowsXP virtual and a Windows10 virtual and the offered MSI files. In desperation I ran up a CentOS6.7 virtual. Accessing the ASDM from this system resulted in a .jnlp file being downloaded. After a little Google it appears that this file is a web start file and requires javaws to execute it, which was not installed. That was asy to fix:

$ yum install icedtea-web

then it was a simple case of:

$ javaws app.jnlp

Job done!
